Dermatology - Biopsies

procedure_room_200x300Dermatology is of particular interest to Dr. Abusharr and he is happy to offer many diagnostic and therapeutic modalities that many primary care physicians refer out to dermatologists. Many of these procedures are performed safely and comfortably at our clinic with comprehensive followup and referral as needed.

The early diagnosis of skin cancer is vital for successful treatment and prognosis. As is well known, early removal of malignant tissue is practically curative with most types of skin cancers.

At this office we can DIAGNOSE suspicious or changing lesions on the trunk or face. Most of the time, a punch or shave biopsy can be performed with local anesthetic right here in our office, giving results in a few days that determine the next step in treatment. For many of these biopsies, the results are reassuring and the patient is put at great ease knowing its not cancer. In some cases, particularly when it is on the face, Dr. Abusharr will refer to a dermatologist who is skilling in Mohs surgery (a technique for excising cancers under microscope guidance). We are also very fortunate to have MD Anderson Center a few miles as an option for referral.

Here is the list of procedures that we do:

  • Punch biopsies
  • Shave biopsies
  • Dessication and Curettage
  • Full thickness excisions
  • Cryosurgery (freezing) of actinic keratoses (pre-cancerous lesions)
  • Cyst excisions
  • Skin-tag removal
  • Lipoma excisions
  • Ingrown toenail removal and partial removal
  • Nail fungus (onychomycosis) diagnosis and treatment
  • Wart removal (multiple options available)
